Agriculture employs more Africans than any other sector, yet it remains one of the least digitised. The gap between smallholder farmer productivity and what modern agricultural technology makes possible is one of the most consequential technology problems on the continent — and also one of the most solvable.
The AgriTech Challenge
Agricultural technology faces a fundamental accessibility challenge in Africa: the people with the most to gain — smallholder farmers managing 2–5 hectares, often without smartphones or reliable data connectivity — are also the hardest to reach with standard digital tools. Solutions designed for large commercial farms in Iowa or Australia do not translate directly to Benue State or the Rift Valley.
At the same time, the agricultural supply chain in Africa is fragmented and opaque. Aggregators, processors, exporters, and development programme managers need better data about what is growing, where, in what quantities, and at what quality — and current systems provide very little of it.
Our Approach
We build AgriTech that starts from the farmer's reality. USSD and basic SMS interfaces for feature phone users, offline-capable mobile apps for smartphone users, and browser-based dashboards for aggregators, processors, and programme managers — designed as an integrated system rather than separate tools for different users.
We work closely with agricultural development organisations, extension workers, and agribusiness operators to understand the operational workflows our systems must support — and we test with real users in real farming contexts before deployment.
